It’s Wellness Wednesday! And if you read my very first blog post, then you know that Wednesdays are committed to re-thinking health and wellness by exploring ways to achieve wellness in ways that you may not have considered!
Up until now, I’ve been posting things which are pretty obvious to link to wellness. Bu today, I want to explore something that’s not so obvious………owning your own business/entrepreneurship.
When most people think of owning a business, they likely think that they’ll have to work non-stop, 24/7, and give up any resemblance of a personal life. But believe it or not, owning your own business can be very freeing…….and it doesn’t have to be all work all the time.
The trick is to build it on the side in a way that you don’t exhaust yourself, or stress yourself out by having it be your only source of income. And of course, never giving up!
Here are my 6 reasons why owning your own business can actually help to renew your spirit and help you to find true wellness.
Wellness & Entrepreneurship Reason # 1 – You Call The Shots
You can make your business the way that you want it to be! You set the tone for your business…..and you can really follow your passion.
Do you want to change the world, even if it’s just one person at a time? Do it!
Do you want to work weekends and have days during the week to avoid the crowd everywhere else? Do it!
Do you want to work from home? The beach? The mountains? A ski lodge? Change your scenery as often as you’d like? Do it!
No more boss telling you what to do, where to go, checking your time, etc. No more corporate ladder, no more working to make someone else rich. Now all the hours you put in benefit you.
You can build a business with a vision that you believe in and one that you want to share with others.
Wellness & Entrepreneurship Reason # 2 – Time Freedom
What do I mean by Time Freedom??…….You set your own hours! You do what you want, when you want, how you want, and WHERE you want.
If you are a night person (like me) you can choose to do much of your business at night, while spending the daylight hours with your family, friends, enjoying the outdoors, going to museums, movies, etc. It’s all up to you!
Sure you may need to spend some of the day taking care of your customers (whether on the phone or in person), depending on what type of business you have, but really, the hours are yours to set.
Plus you get to work from home! So work in your pajamas if you’d like! 😀
Wellness & Entrepreneurship Reason # 3 – You Control Your Financial Future…….and Take Advantage of the Tax Deductions
No longer do you have to worry about working your b-u-t-t off only to be worried that you’ll be laid off because business is down. Nor do you have to worry about whether or not you’ll get a raise.
When you own your own business, what you put in is what you get out. So you no longer need to worry about feeling devalued by your company or your boss even though you know you’ve been doing a stellar job.
You also don’t need to worry that the company will “change directions” and decide to bring in “fresh blood” and cut ties with you………
Plus, most people don’t know this part, but if you DON’T own your own business, even a small one, then you are likely paying several extra hundreds of dollars a month in taxes…….and who wants to do that?!
Not only that, but when you work from home, you can deduct part of your utility bills, rent/mortgage, etc so long as you have a dedicated workspace. Of course you should be sure to consult your tax advisor for more information so that you are reporting everything properly.
So how does owning your own business sound so far? Is it something that you’d like to explore?

Wellness & Entrepreneurship Reason # 4 – No More Annual Reviews
I don’t know about you, but annual review time was the WORST for me! Not because I feared what it would say, but simply because I hated having to take time out of my day to write paragraph upon paragraph stating everything I had done that year.
Frankly, if my boss didn’t already know what I had done all year, then there would have been much bigger problems.
Plus, who wants to worry that they’ll write the wrong thing, or not enough, or that the grammar won’t be correct…….no matter how many times you check it!
And then there’s the issue of potentially being completely caught off guard by a review……which should NEVER happen, because if it does, it’s really a reflection of a poor boss than it is you as a poor employee. But that doesn’t mean this doesn’t happen.
Wellness & Entrepreneurship Reason # 5 – You Choose Who You Work With
I’ve been fortunate to have pretty amicable coworkers, but not everyone is so fortunate. And even still, we all end up working with people that we may not care for.
But when you own your own business you decide who you bring on……..if anyone at all!
You can surround yourself with people who have the same drive, the same passion, and the same vision as you. And ones who will challenge and push you in a positive way.
But when you work for someone else, you don’t really get to choose. Sure you might get to choose at first, when you first accept the job…….but then you are really just agreeing to the boss you’ll have more so than all of the individuals you will work with.
And inevitable people will leave, or change roles/departments, etc and you ultimately have no say.
But owning your own business allows you to decide exactly who you want to work with.
They say you become like the top 5 people you spend your time with. And owning your own business allows you to choose people that will motivate and complement you and your skill set.
Wellness Reason # 6 – Owning Your Own Business Can Be Something That’s Just for you
I saved for the best for last! While all of the reasons above are definitely good reasons, this one is the BEST reason……..particularly for anyone who is a stay-at-home mom!
Raising kids, to me, is the single most important thing that anyone can do. But let’s be honest, it’s draining, and often you feel like you aren’t contributing much at all.
When you do something that doesn’t show immediate results, (and by immediate I mean less than 18 years!) it can be hard to feel like you are accomplishing anything.
But when you own your own business, you get to work on something that is really just for you. And while it may take some times to see results, ultimately, you will see them well before your kids are grown.
As human beings, it is in our nature to want to contribute and sometimes not working can make us feel less than, even if not working is for the best reason possible. But still, you can feel like you need something more! And having your own business is a GREAT way to give yourself that something extra you need to feel like a whole person again (you moms know what I mean).
So while owning your own business isn’t for everyone, and it isn’t always easy, it is definitely worth it. Not only does it give you a renewed spirit by working towards something you really believe in, but it also gives you a great sense of accomplishment as you see your business grow.
And you don’t need to have HUGE success in order to see results either. Whether you start your own business as a means to have something that is just for YOU, make a little extra income, or retire your J.O.B., it can definitely contribute to finding your true wellness.
What are your thoughts on the subject? Do you see the value in owning your own business? Is it something that you’d like to explore? Or maybe you just want some more information about how to get start?!
