It’s Wellness Wednesday again! And if you recall, last week I wrote a little bit about how starting a business can be a great way to renew your spirit…….particularly for those who are stay at home parents! But if you are looking to work from home and/or be your own boss then you may be wondering where to start.
Starting a business can be much easier than you think. Here are 3 ways you can work from home/start a business (if you actually want to work out of the house) and be your own boss with little investment.
1. Sell a Product that You Make
Are you good with your hands? Or have you done something since you were little like sewing or woodwork?
Maybe you can make baby blankets, clothes, dog collars, home decor such as a nice wood wall piece, frames, lamps from industrial piping, etc. Really, the possibilities are endless!
People love one of a kind/handmade pieces, and with the internet, setting up an online shop on places like Etsy or Ebay is easier than ever! Sure it might be a little intimidating to set something up online, particularly if you aren’t tech savvy, but there are tutorials to guide you in just about anything on youtube.com
Plus, having a shop online not only saves you the money from having to rent a brick and mortar store, but it also allows you to deduct some of your household expenses, such as utilities, from your taxes (as long as you have a dedicated business space in your house). Be sure to consult your tax advisor on this!
2. Work from Home by Joining a Network Marketing or Direct Sales Company
Despite what you may have heard or read, network marketing and direct sales are absolutely a viable options for making money! Some of the best known network marketing and direct sales companies are Mary Kay, Tupperware, Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple and Amway, to name a few.
Joining a network marketing/direct sales company is essentially like buying a franchise location just like many owners of McDonald’s, Dominos, Insurance Agencies, etc. You are taking someone else’s brand and proven concept and making it your own…….only you get to “buy into it” with a LOT less money.
Not only are you not required to pay an actual franchise fee, but you also don’t have to worry about brick and mortar start up costs, brand marketing, payroll, etc. Plus, it will likely take you a LOT less time to actually turn a profit! Win! Win!
As a consultant within a company, you are able to offer great customer service one on one and develop relationships with lots of different people. And your customers have the added benefit of cutting out the retailer middle man (such as a Target or Walmart) which means that your customers get better quality products and better quality service all while paying less money.
Plus there are thousands of options out there. So you can really figure out what you’re passionate about and then find a company that matches your passion.

(As a side note – many people may not realize, but when you shop at a store like Walmart you are paying a markup on top of a markup on top of another markup…….the supplier needs to markup their product in order to make money and then the retailer needs to markup the product again so that THEY can make money and in many cases you have a distributer in the middle which also marks up the product. So what you’re left with is a product that you likely paid a decent price for, but really isn’t great quality.)
3. Offer a Service
So maybe you aren’t into creating a product to sell. If that’s the case, find a service you’d like to offer!
Like animals? Try a dog walking business. Good with people? Become a virtual assistant! Or start a grocery delivery service for the elderly and disabled. Maybe try babysitting/au pair! Just be sure to check out any licensing requirements beforehand.
If you’re tech savvy then try something like helping people or businesses get their social media pages like LinkedIn and Facebook set up. Or maybe offer training for some of those platforms.
All it really takes is a little brainstorming and some drive to start start your own business so that you can work from home, or anywhere you want, and be your own boss!
The possibilities are endless! You just need to find your passion, be consistent, and stick with it.
And if you are still stuck on where to start, then I personally recommend network marketing or direct sales. Not only do you not need to come up with the business idea on your own, but you also don’t have to start from scratch. Plus it offers a lot of camaraderie between you and other consultants.
