So I’ve written a couple of posts now about the possibility of working from home / starting you own business / being your own boss and how it can help in achieving wellness.
Being that I am a business owner myself, I know first hand how having your own business can really help to achieve piece of mind…….even if you are just starting out! Taking control of your financial freedom is something I recommend to everyone because in today’s economy, the true J.O.B.s that we saw our parents in really isn’t a thing anymore.
Many of us who have been in the workforce less than 20 years know that company loyalty, and by that I mean employers who actively work to retain their employees, is no longer a thing……at least not in a large capacity. The reasons for this are many, but really irrelevant since there’s not much we can do about it.
We can’t change the way the business leaders choose to run their companies. But we can take matters into our own hands to help secure our financial future regardless of what happens with our J.O.B.
But if you aren’t quite sure that you’re ready to become your own boss and possibly work from home, (maybe you’re not sure where to start, what to do, or WHY you would do it) then consider these 3 tips to get started:
You Deserve More, and Working from Home / Starting a Business Can Help
This one I can’t stress enough. If you aren’t happy with your current job, and maybe you’ve never been happy with your past jobs, then you have to work to change your situation! This is something that no one can do for you.
It may be the tough economy, your boss, spouse, lack of recognition of the amazing work you do, the hours you put in, etc. No matter what the reason is that you aren’t happy, know that you are the only one who can change it. (But that doesn’t mean it’s easy. 😉 )
Odds are that if you’ve never been happy working for someone else, then you’re likely destined to do things your own way! And the only way for that to happen is by you making a conscious decision to MAKE it happen. So take a stand for yourself and know that you deserve more!
Find the Right Business for You
In a previous post, I talked about different businesses you could start but what it boils down to are these 3 ways to discover the right opportunity to start your own business.
Do what you know – Take all that training you’ve gotten through work, school, etc and figure out how to package it in a way that you can offer you own product or service.
Replicate what others have done – Tired of what you know and looking for a change? Sounds like its time to learn about some other businesses that interest you. Are you interested in books? Health & Wellness? Travel? Home Solutions? Whatever it may be, odds are you can find someone who’s been there and pick their brain.
If you’re nervous to start from scratch then consider one of the hundreds of network marketing and direct sales companies out there. Like I’ve said before, it’s essentially like buying a franchise. And since there are SO many, it’s almost impossible not to find one that aligns with your interests and passions.

Find a gap in the market – Brand new businesses spring up when the owner has identified a missing piece. For example, is there something that you’re looking for but just can’t find the right solution?
Maybe there’s you need for the baby (a non-toxic, non-destructible toy or maybe it’s something as simple as a posh baby boutique in your area) and you just can’t seem to find it? Well make it! Then take that product and duplicate and sell it…..or find a good location for a store and open it!
While you might find this to be the most interesting option, know that it is also the riskiest. Make sure to do a LOT of research and educate yourself on the current market that you are considering entering before spending much money.
Write a Business Plan
This is key to starting your own business, particularly if you are starting something new like opening a store or creating a new product. The more you outline what your goals are, the more likely you are to succeed.
You’ll also want to answer some key questions for yourself such as:
- What is my product/service and what problem does it solve?
- Who will I target/who would want my product or service?
- What am I promising my customers/clients?
- What are my business policies (aka – hours, return/satisfaction policy, etc)
- What are my objectives, strategies and steps needed to achieve my goals?
In the end you may sit down and consider the 3 steps above and decide working from home/starting a business and being your own boss just isn’t for you. But if the idea of having control of your time, your finances, and you future is something that interests you then definitely think long and hard about it!
For me, I would get so excited at the possibility of being able to take control that just the thought and then initial actions gave me so much relief! And it continues to get better and better and keeps being exciting as my business continues to grow!
