Acne sucks, and if you suffer from it, especially severe acne, I’m sure that all you want to do is to get rid of it! Hey, I get it!! No one likes to walk around with blemishes, especially if you feel like that’s all that someone sees when they look at you.
And if you are at the end of your rope, and have seen a doctor or dermatologist, the chances are good that you were prescribed Accutane™ , or more specifically the generic version isotretinoin. But before you go down that Accutane road, I implore you to consider what you are doing to your body long term.
Accutane, in its brand name form is no longer available in the US market largely due to market share loss and the millions of dollars paid out by the company which created the drug to the users that were injured by it. But isotretinoin, the generic form, is very much available and frequently prescribed, and over-prescribed, by dermatologists.
See, as I mentioned in a previous post, a dermatologist’s main goal is to treat the skin……and while this is understandable, it’s also a very narrow view-point, because when you take a drug, that drug can have long-term, possibly irrevocable and irreparable damage.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-medication, but there are pros and cons to everything and these have to be weighed before signing up for something that could be very detrimental to your health in the long run.
When I hear someone is taking Accutane (isotretinoin), or considering it, internally I’m screaming “oh, heck NO!!! PLEASE DON’T do that to yourself!!” Yes, this might seem a tad bit overreactive, but really it’s not, and here’s why……..
Accutane can cause severe, even tragic side effects, and psychiatric problems, including:
- Crohn’s disease
- central nervous system injuries
- skeletal damage
- liver damage
- cardiovascular injuries
- bone and muscle loss
- ulcerative colitis
- pancreatitis
- immune system disorder
- depression
- suicide
There are MUCH safer alternatives out there, and yes, they DO work when used properly! Before you sign up to take Accutane, please let me help you find a safer alternative! That’s why I’m here…..to help you take the guesswork out of the equation! If you’d like my help then please contact me now by clicking the button below!
If the above side effects don’t convince you to search for another alternative, then consider this fact……
The FDA posted an alert in 2005 that said all patients taking Accutane should be closely watched for serious symptoms including:
- depression
- suicidal tendencies
- sadness
- short tempers
- anger
- loss of social interaction
- psychosis
- loss of motivation
- changes in appetite
What’s more, in 2002, a director for the FDA told a congressional committee that they received over 3,000 reports of adverse psychiatric symptoms and over 170 reports of suicide attempts connected to the use of Accutane.
Not only that but, Roche Holding AG, the creators of Accutane, pulled the brand name drug from the US Market in 2009 due to several lawsuits against the company. Lawsuits which awarded its claimants at least $33 million in damages.
And if you are STILL in need of convincing that you should NOT be taking Accutane, know that Accutane is considered to be one of the most dangerous drugs on the market as argued by someone at Harvard Law.
Why?? Well aside from all of the above, not only are pregnant women not allowed to take Accutane, but also any woman of child bearing age is only allowed a 1 month supply at first, and cannot receive another until her doctor has determined that she is not pregnant.
From there she also MUST be on at least TWO forms of birth control, due to Accutane having such a high risk of birth defects, miscarriage, and fetal death associated with taking the it. That alone is TERRIFYING!
