When you first find out that you’re pregnant, so many emotions take hold of you. You are excited, nervous, terrified, joyful, and then terrified again……at least that’s how it was for me! Haha!
I asked myself so many questions. Things like – am I eating right? Do I exercise enough? Is the baby ok? How do I keep him safe while he’s growing? And the ever so important…..what do I need to avoid!?
If only I had known during my first pregnancy what I had later discovered before my second pregnancy. I would have done so many things differently. I would have done everything that I could have to avoid having a “chemical pregnancy”.
What do I mean by “chemical pregnancy”? After all, there is actually a medical term known as a chemical pregnancy. But in this case, I mean that I would have done everything thing that I could have to avoid putting as many toxins into my body, and thereby into my baby, as I could have. I think any soon-to-be mom would do the same.
But where the real problem lies is that we don’t know what we don’t know. And, in fact, exposing our bodies to too many toxins, or chemicals, prior to getting pregnant, or even during the early stages of pregnancy, could possibly lead to having a clinical chemical pregnancy, or early miscarriage.
Sure we know that we’re supposed to eat right, avoid junk food, processed food, fast food, food, food, food! And of course no alcohol! Or fish high in mercury (more food), or caffeine, etc. <—- But as you can see, so much of what we know or at least learn (from our doctor) to avoid is food and beverage based!
The problem, though, is that there is so much more we can do, particularly when it comes to what we put on our skin! If I had known that, and I mean REALLY KNOWN, that what goes on the body, goes in your body (and into your baby’s body) then I would have switched out so many products from the get-go!
But no one, not even our doctors, tend to tell us this little bit of info when we get pregnant, or are thinking about getting pregnant. But there really is so much that we could, and should avoid while pregnant, when it comes to what we put on our skin.
Why? Well for starters, according to the Center for Disease Control (or CDC), nearly all Americans including newborns, have more than 200 synthetic chemicals, many of them known to be toxic, in their bodies.
WAIT, WHAT!? Yes, that’s right…….a baby, upon immediately entering the world, already likely has over 200 synthetic chemicals, many of which are toxic, in his or her little tiny system……because he/she is exposed to these while in utero.
That’s a startling fact to me, pregnant or not! So what to do, what to do!? Well, start by taking the 3 simple steps below to begin cleaning up your routine and reducing the possibility of a chemical pregnancy. (You can also contact me for more info by clicking the button below!)
#1 – Change Out Your Shampoo & Conditioner
Most shampoos and conditioners contain phthalates, a big no-no not only for baby, but most definitely for you as well! What are phthalates? Pick up my FREE guide here to find out what these, and other nasty toxins are and what they do to our system.
#2 – Ditch the Powder to Aid in Avoiding a Chemical Pregnancy
Powder is another source of phthalates. It can also contain talc, which is a known carcinogen, if not properly processed. The only way to know if the talc is properly processed is to contact the company that made it.
Side note – it’s a good idea to contact the companies which produce all of your personal care and cosmetics products to ensure that they are testing their products regularly. Testing every batch is preferred.
#3 – Change Out Your Lotion
Lotion is a third source of phthalates, and several other toxins which you don’t want to absorb into your skin. And since you are likely applying lotion to at least half of your body (particularly legs and arms), then you could be increasing the amount of toxins that absorb into your skin.
Finding a lotion that from a clean beauty and personal care company is a GREAT way to start reducing your toxin intake. If you’re not sure where to turn, check out the Environmental Working Group’s website by clicking here. Look for products that are either EWG certified, or have a 1 or 2 ranking.
Of course there are soooo many more products that I recommend to switch out to help avoid a chemical pregnancy. But the information can be overwhelming, especially when dealing with all of the hormones and emotions that come along with pregnancy, so I will save that info for another post!
